The Colosseum, also named the Flavian Amphitheater, is a large amphitheater in Rome. It was built during
the reign of the Flavian emperors as a gift to the Roman people.
It is the largest ancient amphitheatre ever built, and is still the largest standing amphitheatre in the
world today, despite its age.
After 4 centuries of active usage, the magnificent arena fell into disregard, and up until the 18th
century it was utilized as a source of building elements. Though two-thirds of the original Colosseum
has been damaged with time, the amphitheater stays a popular tourist location, in addition to a renowned
symbol of Rome and its long, troubled history.

LET US TAKE YOU ON A VIRTUAL TOUR OF THE COLOSSEUM
The Colosseum, Rome’s greatest amphitheater, was commissioned by the Emperor Vespasian in 72 CE.
It is built on the marshy site of an artificial lake and provided the Romans a venue for hosting
executions, animal hunts, gladiatorial games, re-enactments, and dramas. At the time of its
construction, it was called the Flavian amphitheater. Later on, the amphitheater came to be
known as the Colosseum after the colossal statue of Sun located near it.
The design of the Colosseum was unique. At 52m high, covering 3357 square metres, and with a
capacity to seat 73,000 people, it was the largest and most complex amphitheatre in the Roman
world. No other amphitheatre eclipsed it.
Colosseum is an elliptical shape building with a short axis of 156m, and a long one of 188m. It
stood 50 meters high, 190 meters long, and 156 meters wide. The structure of the Colosseum was
built of several different materials: travertine blocks were used for load-bearing pillars, and
external walls, stairs, and radial walls were constructed from blocks and bricks of tufa. Arches
and vaults supported the structure solidly.
INSIDE THE COLOSSEUM
Spread across 6 acres and standing 150 feet tall, The Colosseum still holds the Guinness World Record
for the world’s largest amphitheatre. Hence, this massive arena has a whopping 80 entrances so that
people can enter and exit quickly. In the initial years, this arena was used for hosting games, shows
etc and could easily seat 80,000 spectators for an array of events. This puts this ancient landmark in
par with today’s modern sports stadiums.
Arena was the main area where the battles were fought. This once blood-soaked floor, however, was
majorly demolished by archaeologists in the 19th century and only a part of it was recovered so that it
can be accessed only via special tours. You can enjoy a breathtaking 360 degree view of the amphitheater
standing from here. Located below the Colosseum is an underground area called the Hypogeum, this
was divided into two levels which comprised of a series of connected corridors and tunnels that lead
into and out of the Colosseum.
