Chichén Itzá is a complex of Mayan ruins on Mexico's Yucatán Peninsula. A massive step pyramid, known as
El Castillo or Temple of Kukulcan, dominates the ancient city, which thrived from around 600 A.D. to the
1200s. Graphic stone carvings survive at structures like the ball court, Temple of the Warriors and the
Wall of the Skulls.
Chichen Itza is a well-known Archaeological Site and more after being selected one of the New 7 Wonders
of the World in July the 7th, 2007.
Chichen Itza welcomes over 2,500,000 visitors each year and you can reach the archaeological site by
car, bus or with different tours.
Chichen Itza is beautiful and magnificent just as you must have already heard and it has plenty of Mayan
Ruins to visit and get to know about its history.
Chichen Itza is divided in Old Chichen and Chichen Itza where you can find 6 Mayan Ruins in the Old
Chichen section and about 20 Mayan Ruins in the New Chichen or Chichen Itza, making it a total of 26
Mayan Ruins to see on the Mayan Site.
YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS THIS AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE
The Chichen Itza night show is official titled “Chichen Itza Noches de Kukulkan” and the shows runs
every night of the week EXCEPT FOR MONDAYS.During the summer the show starts at 8 pm, in the winter it
is an hour earlier at with entrance at 7 pm. They recommend arriving 15-40 minutes before the show.
Nightly sound-and-light shows illuminate the buildings' sophisticated geometry. Walking around the
Mayan ruins under the stars and moonlight with a limited number of other visitors was an incredible
experience in itself. But then the light show started and added a new sense of entertainment to the
“normal ruin experience”.
LET US TAKE YOU ON A VIRTUAL TOUR OF CHICHEN ITZA
Chichen Itza was founded by the Maya, an ancient people native to the Yucatan Peninsula. Historians believe that Chichen Itza was built due to its close proximity to the Xtoloc cenote. Chichen Itza was founded by the Maya, an ancient people inhabiting the Yucutan peninsula.
Historic accounts differ as to when Chichen Itza was built and ultimately developed into a center of political and economic power. Some accounts place the establishment of the city in the early 400s A.D., while others suggest construction started a few years later, in the middle part of the fifth century.
Located on the Yucatan peninsula, the Mayan city of Chichen Itza was built out of limestone blocks chiseled out of nearby quarries. The blocks were so finely cut that they fit together without mortar. The sheer weight of the limestone stabilizes the structures, some of which are nearly 1,000 years old.
MYSTERIES AND FACTS
★The term Chichen Itza means ‘the mouth at the well of Itza’. It is believed Itza means ‘water magicians’, deriving from the Mayan Itz for ‘magic’ and á for ‘water’.
★ revealed that it had nine platforms, a single stairway, and a temple containing human remains, a jade-studded jaguar throne, and a so-called Chac Mool.
★ At Chichen Itza, you can see a round-shaped observatory, the El Caracol, which was specifically used to gauge the positions of planets and the sun.
★The four most well-known clusters are the Great North Platform, the Ossario Group, the Central Group and the Old Chichen, which is not open to the public. The Great North Platform is home to the most visited sites of Chichen Itza, including the Kukulkan Pyramid, the Great Ball Court and the Temple of the Jaguars.
★During the Spring (20th of March) and Autumn Equinox (22nd September), the sun’s rays create a shadow across the Kukulkan Pyramid that gives the appearance of a serpent slithering down the staircase.
★ Many of the sites in Chichen Itza are known for their unusual sounds. If you clap once from one end of the Ball Court, it produces nine echoes in the middle of the court. Additionally, a clap in front of the Kukulkan Pyramid creates an echo resembling the serpent’s chirp.
