Petra is a famous archaeological site in Jordan's southwestern desert. Dating to around 300 B.C., it was
the capital of the Nabatean Kingdom.Accessed via a narrow canyon called Al Siq, it contains tombs and
temples carved into pink sandstone cliffs, earning its nickname, the "Rose City." Perhaps its most
famous structure is 45m-high Al Khazneh, a temple with an ornate, Greek-style facade, and known as The
Treasury.
Renowned for its charm and ancient cultural heritage, Petra marks the achievement of an impressive
civilization, the Nabataean Arabs, who perfectly carved the city into its mountains.Set into dramatic
mountains and gorges, the city of Petra was carved into the rock face by the ancient Nabatean people.
Entering the city is a magical experience and each step reveals a new wonder – visitors marvel at the
intricate carvings in the rock as they weave through the hidden pathways.
Petra is an ancient city that lies in present-day Jordan and dates back to the fourth century B.C. Ruins
of the once-great metropolis and trading center now serve as an important archeologic site and tourist
attraction. It is also called as "THE LOST CITY".
YOU DON'T WANT TO MISS THIS AN UNFORGETTABLE EXPERIENCE
Petra by Night is a light show that is on every Monday, Wednesday and Thursday night from 20:30 to
22:30. They light the walk from the Visitor Centre, all along the Siq and up to the Treasury with 1,500
candles.
During the evening there is a live fiddle player, complimentary tea being served around and a short
story telling session at the end. Entry to Petra by Night isn’t included in your day entry to Petra and
costs an additional 17 JOD.
It’s a great opportunity to see Petra in a different light (literally and metaphorically) and with not
quite as many people around.
Despite the lights from the candles you will still be able to see a lot of stars, which for me is always
a magical experience.
LET US TAKE YOU ON A VIRTUAL TOUR OF THE COLOSSEUM
Petra was established in 312 AC, and it became the capital of the Nabateans people, who were
referred to in the Bible. They inhabited the region of Petra between the IV AC and II DC.
On the basis of discussions with Bedoul stone workers, and his own experience as an architect,
R. calculates that “it would have taken approximately three years to complete el-Khazneh.
Petra's amphitheater was carved out, too, from the mountain rock and can seat a maximum of 8,500
people. The amphitheater was dated back to the 1st century AD and was designed with features
from the Hellenistic period. The majority of the theater's features have eroded due to the flash
floods and earthquake that occurred in the city around 300 AD.
During the first centuries BC to AD, Petra is believed to have been home to 20,000 – 30,000
people and was an important trading city. It then sat uninhabited for over five centuries until
rediscovered by a Swiss explorer in 1812, hence the name the 'Lost City'.
INSIDE THE PETRA
Inside Petra, also known as the “Rose City”, is a labyrinth of archaeological wonders that has been
around for over a thousand years. It is a testament to the ingenuity and organisation of the Nabatean
civilisation.
You can't go inside the Treasury, but there's nothing to see. It's just an empty chamber. The
Nabataeans, who carved the ancient city of Petra into the cliffs in the 1st century AD, were much more
focused on the facade.
There is simply a blank cubical hall inside the Treasury entrance, with smaller rooms branching off it,
the entryway porch flanked by apartments with odd circular openings above their doorways.
As per local belief, the Treasury is capped by a funeral urn containing a pharaoh's riches.
