TAJ MAHAL

Taj Mahal, also spelled Tadj Mahall, mausoleum complex in Agra, western Uttar Pradesh state, northern India. The Taj Mahal was built by the Mughal emperor Shah Jahān (reigned 1628–58) to immortalize his wife Mumtaz Mahal (“Chosen One of the Palace”), who died in childbirth in 1631, having been the emperor’s inseparable companion since their marriage in 1612. India’s most famous and widely recognized building, it is situated in the eastern part of the city on the southern (right) bank of the Yamuna (Jumna) River. Agra Fort (Red Fort), also on the right bank of the Yamuna, is about 1 mile (1.6 km) west of the Taj Mahal.

LET US TAKE YOU ON A VIRTUAL TOUR OF THE VERY BEAUTIFUL THE TAJ MAHAL

INSIDE THE TAJ

images

Inside the Taj Mahal, the cenotaphs honoring Mumtaz Mahal and Shah Jahan are enclosed in an eight-sided chamber ornamented with pietra dura (an inlay with semi-precious stones) and a marble lattice screen. But the gorgeous monuments are just for show: The real sarcophagi are in a quiet room below, at garden level.
Walk down to the burial chamber, lying just beneath the central chamber and you are at last in front of the graveyards of the two love souls, Mughal Emperor Shah Jahan and his Empress, Mumtaz Mahal. In sync with the ethics of Islam, the cenotaphs are not opulent but spiritual. While the cenotaph of Mumtaz Mahal has inscriptions from holy Quran, the side tombs are inscribed with 99 names of Allah. The cenotaph of Shah Jahan is larger than the queen’s but is also simple with designs resembling that of the other sarcophagus.
